Sonic The Hedgehog 2 opened ahead of the first film, making $71 million at the domestic box office. The weekend opening beat the first movie with a great margin.
The PG-rated family movie made more than expected, earning $26.5 million on Friday from 4,234 theaters.
Most of the audience has been families and kids. Despite the movie being released in the COVID era, it is one of the biggest launches of all time for the video-game adaptation. The movie beat the first Sonic and it has been the biggest weekend opening for Paramount since 2014.
David A Gross, from Franchise Entertainment Research, said, “this is an outstanding opening, with solid reviews and very good audience scores, Sonic is going to have a strong run.”

The first Sonic movie was released in February 2020, a month before the cinemas shut down in the country due to COVID-19. It still managed to make $58 million in its three-day weekend.
Overseas, Sonic 2 grossed $37 million from 53 markets, making a foreign total of around $70 million. So far, Sonic 2 has made $141 million globally.
Jim Carrey, James Marden, and Tika Sumpter returned for the sequel about a blue hedgehog (voiced by Ben Shwartz) based on the video game. The sequel continues Sonic’s life on Earth after his arrival as he tries to make new friends.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had the same release date as Michael Bay’s Ambulance, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza Gonzalez, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Even though Ambulance is favored by critics, the movie opened to $8.7 million.
Overseas the movie earned $2.8 million from 68 markets, with a weekend total of $31 million globally, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

DC’s and Warner Bro’s The Batman had a splendid weekend opening and made it to the top five with $6.2 million, pushing its global tally to $735 million.
The biggest opening overseas was Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore which made $58 million from 22 international markets, despite cinema closures in China due to COVID-19. It opens next weekend in North America.
